Recent Projects on floods and drainage
HydroS has been engaged in a number of projects in County Galway. Below are some of our recent projects:
1) Ballinasloe, Co Galway – Pluvial Flooding Risk
HydroS Engineering hydrology consultants conducted a detailed flood risk assessment to comply with DoEHLG (Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government) Flood Risk Management guidelines for a single site in Ballinasloe, Co Galway to obtain planning permission from Galway County Council for the development of the site.
A portion of the site was at risk from pluvial flooding (low lying area where the flood water could collect) and also the speed of the flow of water into the site was high.
The flood mitigation solutions were, geocellular system under the green area and a rain garden at the entrance to the site.
2) Ahascragh, Ballinasloe, Co Galway – Fluvial Flooding Risk
HydroS Engineering hydrology consultants conducted a detailed flood risk assessment to comply with DoEHLG Flood Risk Management guidelines for a single site in Ahascragh, Ballinasloe, Co Galway to obtain planning permission from Galway County Council for the development of the site.
The risk of flooding was due to fluvial flooding from Ahscragh river and one of its tributaries. After carrying-out a statistical analysis of floods (Flood frequency analysis) for ungauged catchments and a flood routing the flood levels and flood inundation areas were identified.
The finished floor levels were found to have a generous freeboard.
3) Kinvara, Co Galway – Groundwater Flooding Risk
HydroS Engineering hydrology consultants conducted a detailed flood risk assessment to comply with DoEHLG Flood Risk Management guidelines for a single site in Kinvara, Co Galway to obtain planning permission from Galway County Council for the development of the site.
This site is close to a turlough and it was examined for risks due to groundwater flooding.
Using available data and accepted methodology the finished floor levels were found to be adequate against risk of flooding.
4) Clarinbridge, Co Galway – Fluvial or Pluvial Flooding or Combination
HydroS Engineering hydrology consultants conducted detailed flood risk assessments to comply with DoEHLG Flood Risk Management guidelines for a number of sites within a development in Clarinbridge, Co Galway to obtain planning permission from Galway County Council for the development of these sites.
These sites had risk of flooding due to fluvial flooding or Pluvial flooding or from both types. The flood risks were examined using statistical methods and flood routing.
The finished floor levels were found to have a generous freeboard against flooding.
5) Housing development in Ballinasloe – Fluvial Flooding
HydroS Engineering hydrology consultants conducted detailed flood risk assessments to comply with DoEHLG Flood Risk Management guidelines for a housing development in Ballinasloe, Co Galway to obtain planning permission from Galway County Council.
This site had a risk of flooding due to fluvial flooding.
Flood risk was estimated using FSU (Flood Studies Update) flood frequency analysis and flood hydrograph estimation methods by OPW (Office of Public Works).
The flood levels were estimated by hydraulic modelling
6) Astroturf pitch at GAA grounds, Ballinderreen, Co Galway
The drainage system was designed to accommodate the entire surface water from the AstroTurf pitch and the adjoining basketball courts.
An economical drainage system was adopted after examining a number of options.
7) Report for compensation from flooding – Loughrea, Co Galway
A house that experienced recurrent flooding was examined and found to be caused by pluvial flooding and change of flood regime in the area.
After examining the finished floor levels, ground elevations of the site relative to the general ground levels of the area it was concluded that the existing house will have a continuous risk of flooding.
